By John's father, July 1991

The first year of John's life started normally but then became very traumatic with illness: in rapid succession - pneumonia, bronchitis, virus pneumonia, and then one day right after Dr. Amick left he broke out with chicken-pox. This left him with scar tissue on his brain, causing speech impairment and learning disability. When he was 8 months old we took him along to grandfathers for Christmas dinner, the only time he was out of the house for seven months. This was a serious mistake, as he was so dehydrated we had to carry him on a pillow.

John met with many disappointments and at times was misevaluated, but eventually became physically healthy. In the third grade at Jefferson School he was not able to learn as other children. He was then enrolled in the Jackson St. School in Elkhart for special education. It took much time to help and care for him as well as the transportation to and from school (36 miles a day) as there was no transportation provided at that time.

Although John cannot read or write he can operate any tractor, combine, and other machinery. Now, at age 42, he lives at home and is busy helping on the home farm which his brother dana rents. Four of his sisters and his brother Kvin have moved into the thumb area of Michigan. John, being handy at most farm work, especially field work, enjoys visiting and helping them on their farms.

John responds with a big smile and has a special place in his heart for people who talk to him and make him feel like a part of the group.
